Cloverfield is terrific. (Don’t worry, I won’t spoil anything for anyone.) I figured with a mid-January release either it was going to be impossibly complicated or collosally disappointing. It’s neither. I usually find thillers—if you can call this movie that—unsatisfying because they tend to not care about their characters, building up tension only to setup the next...

"Alma" by Junot Diaz (The New Yorker) →
This was published over a month ago in the winter fiction issue but you should still read it anyway.

She thinks of love like it is in the movies; Ingrid and Bogey, Eva and Cary, New York and Woody. An old-fashioned, Panchromatic kiss, right before the curtain closes, to the soft swelling of orchestral chords, tender and truly. Everything is literally in black and white; good and bad, right and wrong, love and not love. She feels that she can press pause at anytime and pick these things up,...
I am Legend Predicts Super Bowl (sort of) →
The radiator in my bedroom is broken. There is no way to turn it off; it’s always on full-blast, balls to the wall. According to my Wii, it’s 18° outside my window, but it’s pushing 85° in here. Two weeks of Giants/Patriots Super Bowl hype (is there anything worse than that?) is sure to cause trouble in paradise due to Jessica’s unfortunate allegiance to Big Blue. Sally...

Green Bay TV station ditches Seinfeld to irk... →
Apparently, Eli Manning’s favorite show, as is mine, is Seinfeld. So some genius in Green Bay decided to pull it off the air this Saturday and show something else during its normal 5:30 p.m. time slot. There’s just one problem: the Giants hotel has TBS and guess what they’re showing at the same time. Sweet fancy Moses.
Bobby Fischer Dies at 64 →
I wrote my thesis paper in college on Fischer’s 1972 World Chess Championship match against Boris Spassky. Fischer is the only American ever to hold the title and his victory—and his bizarre decent into madness after its conclusion—is meticulously described in David Edmonds’ and John Eidinow’s fantastic book Bobby Fischer Goes to War. I know a book (or thesis paper) on chess hardly sounds...
Thursdays have been less exciting since The Office was put on hiatus due to the writer’s strike. It’s depressing that my Thursday night social life revolves around an NBC sitcom. I think it’s nostalgia for eighth grade and the watching of brand new episodes of Seinfeld.
For the record, Pantera is an effective method of battling drowsiness.

My fake, real band, The Motherboys, (not to be confused with my real, fake band) website has been launched. Visit it here. I expect Jessica to make it prettier and to add other things (such as content) later. http://www.rockband.com/bands/the_motherboys PS - All the links at the top of the page have been fixed. They work now, I swear.

Ben Heckendorn is that crazy guy who makes portable versions of video game consoles that usually pop up on blogs every few months or so. Unbeknownst to me, he made an Xbox 360 laptop two summers ago, which totally blows away all the portable Ataris and NESes he created before. I wish I had it so I could play Forza during my lunch breaks at work.

Allston is surprisingly devoid of cafes and coffee shops. (My plan is to buy the International Bicycle Center and turn it into a diner modeled after Monk’s from Seinfeld.) I’m at Herrell’s; it’s about a 105 degrees; Sally just said “toda-eh” and Jessica is excited that I just bought this on ebay.

I wrote my first letter of recommendation yesterday. It was regarding my sister for an alumni scholarship at Emmanuel. Writing it wasn’t as difficult as I imagined it would be from the other side; when asking begging Rich every time I needed one for grad programs and whatnot. It feels so narcissistic though, asking someone to tell someone else how wonderful and grand you are. But I actually...
